Foundation

Structure and governance

Who runs the foundation, how it is funded, and how it relates to OneThought AI, the company that builds products on its research.

Two organisations, one mission

Scaling Truth Research Foundation

A not-for-profit research organisation. Holds the mission, does the research, owns or licenses the models, publishes the evaluations, and runs the public access programmes.

OneThought AI

A company that builds and sells products on the foundation's research: Media Studio, Media Monitor and Viber. It is bound by the foundation's AI principles for those products.

The rules between them

Licence

OneThought AI uses foundation research under a written licence that requires the products to follow the foundation's principles.

Revenue

A stated share of OneThought AI revenue from products built on foundation research is paid to the foundation.

Client data

Client data belongs to the client. It is not used to train foundation models without the client's consent.

Publication

OneThought AI cannot stop the foundation publishing evaluations or findings, including ones that reflect badly on its products.

Conflicts of interest

People with roles in both organisations declare them, and do not decide matters where the two organisations' interests differ.

Board

The board approves the charter, the principles and the annual report, and decides high-stakes releases on the advice of the advisory group.

How release decisions are made

  1. The model owner proposes a release and its access tier under the release policy.
  2. Misuse testing is run and summarised.
  3. For high-stakes models, the advisory group reviews.
  4. The board, or a delegate it names, approves.
  5. The decision and its reasons are published with the release.

Funding

  • Grants from public bodies and foundations.
  • Donations.
  • The revenue share from OneThought AI.
  • Partner contributions of compute, data or evaluation effort.

We do not accept funding that comes with control over what we publish, or from parties whose interests conflict with our safeguards.

Every funder and partner, and what each funded, is listed in the annual report.
